The Interview

Topics We'll Cover

We don't run through every question — this is a conversation, not a checklist. But knowing these areas helps you show up prepared and confident.

01

🏁 Your Origin Story

This sets the stage. Listeners need to understand who you are and why this brand exists.

  • What problem were you solving when you started the business?
  • What were you doing before launching this brand?
  • What did the first location actually look like?
  • When did you realize this concept could scale beyond one location?
  • What almost stopped the business early on?
02

🤝 The Franchise Decision

We want to understand the transition from operator to franchisor — and what you learned.

  • Why did you franchise instead of expanding corporately?
  • What signals told you the model was ready?
  • What surprised you most about becoming a franchisor?
  • What mistakes did you make early in franchising that you'd avoid today?
03

📈 Growth Mechanics

Listeners want the real story of how you scaled — not just the headline number.

  • What did growth look like year by year?
  • What unlocked your first real scaling phase?
  • What slowed you down at any point?
  • What is driving expansion right now?
  • What does the next stage look like?
04

🎯 Who Succeeds in Your System

Help future franchisees self-qualify. Be honest about who thrives and who doesn't.

  • Who is the ideal franchisee for your brand?
  • What background do your best operators come from?
  • What traits consistently predict success?
  • Who is not a fit — and how do you screen for that?
05

💰 Unit Economics

Operators in our audience want to know if the model actually works. Be ready to speak to this.

  • What makes the model financially attractive for operators?
  • How long does it typically take to ramp a new location?
  • What are the biggest cost drivers in the business?
  • What separates your top performers from average operators?
06

📣 The Marketing Engine

This is the core theme of our show. Come prepared to go deep here.

  • What drove your earliest customer acquisition?
  • What marketing channels perform best today?
  • How do franchisees generate local demand?
  • What marketing support does corporate provide?
  • What marketing investments produced your biggest return?
07

⚡ Your Edge

What makes your brand genuinely different — in a way customers and operators actually feel.

  • What makes your concept different from competitors?
  • Why do customers choose you over alternatives?
  • What operational advantage helped you grow faster than others in your category?
08

🧠 Leadership & Lessons

The hardest part of scaling is usually you. Share what you've learned so others can grow faster.

  • What was the hardest leadership transition as you scaled?
  • What almost broke the business?
  • What lesson took the longest to learn?
  • What advice would you give someone franchising today?
09

🔭 Where You're Headed

End strong. Listeners want to know what's next and what you're building toward.

  • What does the next five years look like?
  • How large can this brand realistically become?
  • What markets or innovations are you most excited about?
  • What's the long-term vision for the brand?
Recording Day Setup

Set Up for Video & Audio

10X Franchise is a video podcast recorded on Riverside.fm. Your host will send you a link — no software download needed on desktop. Just open it in Chrome, Edge, or Safari and you're in.

🎥 Video

  • Use a good webcam Built-in laptop cameras are okay in a pinch, but an external HD webcam makes a noticeable difference in quality.
  • Camera at eye level Looking slightly down into your camera is unflattering. Stack books or a box under your laptop to bring it up.
  • Face your light source Sit facing a window or place a lamp/ring light in front of you. Never record with a window behind you — it silhouettes your face.
  • Clean, simple background A plain wall, a bookshelf, or a tidy office works great. Busy or cluttered backgrounds pull attention away from you.

🎙️ Audio

  • Use an external microphone if you have one A USB mic or even the mic on a wired headset beats your laptop's built-in microphone every time. No headphones required.
  • Check your audio source before we start Riverside lets you switch audio inputs. Confirm the right mic is selected in your browser or device settings before we go live.
  • Sit in a quiet room Watch for squeaky chairs, HVAC, open windows, pets, and echo-heavy hard floors. A carpeted room or small office with soft surfaces works best.
  • Have a glass of water nearby 60 minutes of talking is more than most people expect. Water helps.

💻 Tech

  • Join on desktop or laptop via Chrome, Edge, or Safari No download required. If joining on mobile, download the Riverside app before the call.
  • Close unnecessary apps, tabs, and VPNs VPNs especially can cause audio and video drops. Close what you don't need before joining.
  • Silence your phone and pause notifications Slack pings and message previews get picked up on mic more than you'd expect.
  • Block 90 minutes The recording usually runs 45–60 minutes, but buffer time means no pressure to cut things short when the conversation gets good.
